General Description:
The role of the Tennessee School for the Blind Director of Career and Technical Education is to provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of career and technical education programs within a school district or educational institution. The director is responsible for ensuring that students are prepared for successful careers in various industries by offering relevant and up-to-date technical skills training, industry certifications, and work-based learning opportunities. This job reports to the Director of Schools.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Plans, develops, and implements a comprehensive program for students in career and technical education.
· Provides direction, consultation, and supervision to program employees; consults with centrally based staff and school-based staff on individual cases and on interpretation of federal, state, and local policies and procedures.
· Creates and enforces guidelines, protocols and processes for career and technical education; establishes both immediate and future objectives for the department; tracks the advancement of different services; suggests modifications for improvement.
· Collaborates with the TN Department of Education, the Office for Civil Rights, and other agencies to address student needs and make sure that programs are in line with federal, state, and local laws.
· Collaborates with local agencies, parents, and school staff to address issues and obtain necessary resources and services.
· Oversees and carries out tasks related to personnel administration for employees, such as recruitment and termination, performance evaluations, task assignments, tracking attendance and travel expenses, and approving time off.
· Helps create budgets for programs, works with other departments or agencies to optimize services, and keeps track of spending within approved budgets.
· Creates and enforces guidelines, rules, and processes for career and technical education; sets both short-term and long-term objectives for the department; evaluates the effectiveness of different services; suggests improvements when necessary.
· Carry out all the priorities and strategies of the CTE through Carl D. The Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.
· Maintains appropriate licensure and acknowledges that continued employment with the TN. Department of Education, State Special Schools is contingent upon providing required documentation to validate licensure in a timely manner.
· May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities.
Other Functions
· Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
· Supports other classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualification
· A bachelor’s degree in Career and Technical Education from an accredited four-year college or university, three (3) years of teaching experience in an approved career and Technical Education program and two (2) years of appropriate employment experience in a recognized occupation; or
· An endorsement as a Pre-K-12 administrator or secondary supervisor or principal.
· Experience in facilitating professional learning is preferred.
· Previous experience working with a district coach is preferred.
· Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, educators, parents, and community members.
· Knowledgeable about formative and diagnostic assessments and research based instructional practices.
· Deep understanding of best practices for teaching.
Special Knowledge/Skills
SKILLS must be able to comprehend various types of written communication, including letters, reports, forms, articles, proposals, contracts, and so on. Needs the skill to create various types of documents like correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, policies, etc. using specified templates. The position necessitates the skill of utilizing logical or scientific reasoning to identify issues, gather information, verify facts, and make sound conclusions. It also requires the ability to interpret a wide range of technical instructions presented in mathematical or diagram form. Needs to be skilled in applying mathematical formulas, performing addition and subtraction, multiplication, and division, working with decimals and percentages. Involves interacting with individuals in ways that go beyond simply following or giving directions. Must be able to handle pressure and respond effectively in emergency circumstances.
KNOWLEDGE is required to have general knowledge of the Tennessee CTE Program Course of Study. Extensive understanding of the ethical standards set forth by professional organizations and government authorities at the federal, state, and local levels. Extensive understanding of the latest research, patterns, techniques, and advancements in career and technical education. The job requires specific knowledge-based skills such as understanding codes, policies, regulations, and laws, age-appropriate activities, lesson planning, child development stages, and behavior management techniques.
ABILITY is required to arrange plans for activities, meetings, or events; collect, organize, and categorize information; and operate necessary tools and machinery for work tasks. Having the ability to adapt is necessary when collaborating with others in various situations, interpreting data through specific yet varied methods, and using standardized procedures to operate equipment. Capability is necessary to interact with a variety of people and/or teams, handle different types of data for various purposes, and use specialized equipment related to the job. Problem solving is necessary to examine problems and develop strategies for action. Solving problems using data often involves interpreting guidelines independently, while problem-solving with equipment is typically of moderate difficulty. The job requires certain skills and competencies such as building and maintaining positive relationships, being adaptable to shifting work demands, keeping information confidential, demonstrating tact and patience, and being willing to work flexible hours.
