MIECHV Parent Educator
Purpose Statement
The job of MIECHV Parent Educator is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for working with parents of newborns to age five children, promoting their involvement and providing information and/or direction; assisting parents in goal setting and educational development; developing and refining program materials; and assisting in transitioning students to early childhood intervention preschool and kindergarten.
Essential Functions
Acts as a case manager for children birth to age 5 for the purpose of providing for the early childhood education, related, medical and mental health services.
Assists in the recruitment, assessment and retention of high risk families to participate in MIECHV programming for the purpose of serving high risk families at a priority level.
Completes additional required record-keeping and data points for the purpose of meeting performance measures.
Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records (e.g. work/appointment schedules, contact logs, parent resources, etc.) for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information.
Organizes parent workshops and meetings for the purpose of providing information on parenting and developing parent involvement with the child's education.
Participates in additional training and quality assurance for the purpose of serving a high risk population.
Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees (e.g. parent-student workshops, educational seminars, department in-service, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.
Performs duties in alignmnet with guidance from certifying agenies including DESE, Parents as Teachers National Center and MIECHV for the purpose of increasing success.
Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials (e.g. student progress, contacts with parents, teachers, outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to parents and staff, providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
Refers students and parents to outside agencies for the purpose of meeting the needs of the children and their families.
Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources (e.g. other district staff, outside agencies, parents, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as may be required.
Schedules and conducts home visits for the purpose of teaching parents how to teach their children at home, in preparation for school enrollment.
Screens infants and children up to kindergarten age for the purpose of determining developmental levels and creating a program of instruction for parents, including providing resources to connect families to community programs and supports.
Experience: Job related experience is required.
Education: Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area.
