ANIMAL CAREGIVER - MILO SANCTUARY
Summary: The Animal Caregiver helps to ensure that all Milo Foundation Sanctuary animals are healthy, happy and cared for, acting with urgency and efficiency to attain these goals. This team member provides daily hands-on care for dogs (and cats unless allergic), participates in some farm animal care, observes and promptly reports any concerns with animals, and does whatever is necessary to support the Milo Foundation’s mission.
Under the direction of Milo leadership, this Caregiver will follow instructions for observing animals for changes in behavior, weight loss or other health issues; complete regular daily chores with the dogs; maintain a clean and orderly environment; and assist senior staff members as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively and with a positive attitude with the Milo Sanctuary team for the care, benefit, and promotion of the animals in our care.
- Work independently and in teams as required to provide regular socialization and enrichment for the animals.
- Ensure animals are fed and watered, cleaned up after, have dry bedding, medicated, rotated to yards and cared for throughout each day as scheduled and as needed.
- Be attentive to changes in or concerns with animals’ health or wellness and report observations to management daily.
- Assist with maintenance chores in support of the animals’ safety and comfort.
- Follow Milo Foundation policies, procedures, and task lists for daily assignments, including accurate and timely communications and work completion.
- Cooperate with any and all governmental compliance.
- Communicate efficiently, clearly and in a timely manner with coworkers, supervisors and managers regarding scheduling needs and any other work-related concerns.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred skills & Experience:
- First-hand knowledge and understanding of dog behavior to ensure proper handling and safety.
- Understanding of cat behavior and familiarity with cat care and health..
- Experience training animals with positive reinforcement methods is a plus.
- Interest to pursue continued learning in the field of animal behavior and training.
- Experience in giving medications to animals and ability to fulfill record-keeping of medical process.
- Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or processes; problem solving skills, asking questions/seeking answers independently and enthusiastically.
- Communication skills to work well with coworkers, keep supervisors informed of activities and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
- Ability to work independently and with self-motivation to complete all tasks efficiently and thoroughly.
- Professionalism, self-motivation and reliability in attendance and performance to ensure all tasks and responsibilities vital for the well-being of the animals are completed.
Physical & Other Requirements:
- Routinely lift up to 50 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to strong dogs on leash, lifting, carrying, cleaning, traversing on uneven ground in rough terrain, reaching, stooping, squatting and bending.
- Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat, wet and cold.
- Daily exposure to dogs, puppies, cats, farm and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
- The general schedule for this position is 3-5 days per week, 6-8 hours per day from mornings to evenings, and likely to include at least one weekend day and holiday work. Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the organization and the animals!
Future advancement is possible, depending on experience, skills, quality of job performance and dependability upon a performance review after a three-month introductory period, and after a years employment in good standing.
