POSITION SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator drives and operates heavy equipment including sewer Jet Truck, Vactor Truck and Sewer TV Truck in the cleaning and maintenance of sanitary sewer structures and pipes throughout the City of Columbus.
ESSENTIAL (PRIMARY) DUTIES:
- Drives and operates heavy Jet Truck, Vactor Truck and/or Sewer TV Truck in a safe and effective manner to clean and maintain sanitary sewer pipes throughout the city.
- Adjusts truck settings and watches monitoring system for proper water flow and pressure depending on the type of work being performed. Utilizes the correct cleaning tips and ensures proper water pressure and flow is regulated as appropriate for the cleaning tip selected. Operates the suction hose and boom, checking the work area for proper clearance from vehicles, property, and overhead utilities.
- Completes daily work orders, inspecting and documenting completed work.
- Operates vehicle, utilizing care and caution and following all traffic laws and department policies.
- Assists Laborers in the completion of assigned duties.
- Regularly inspect vehicle and equipment to ensure proper mechanical functioning and performs maintenance and/or repairs to equipment.
- Has a working knowledge of all department equipment and will be required to fill in for other department employees during vacations and other absences that may occur.
- Assigned rotational standby duty for after hours, weekends, holidays, and/or emergency basis as needed.
OTHER DUTIES
- Operation of backhoes, excavators, easement machine, trencher, dump truck, and other equipment may also be required.
- Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Working knowledge of and ability to properly operate trucks and heavy equipment used by the department.
- Ability to follow established departmental procedures, regulations, and policies as related to work responsibilities. Includes the ability to comply with personnel policies.
- Must be professional and maintain a presentable appearance due to the position’s public visibility. Incumbent works directly with the customer and must be able to meet their concerns, which also requires making sure they know and understand departmental policies as they relate to their questions and /or concerns.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical activity expected is climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Moderate physical effort is frequently required for regular periods of time. Vision sufficient for Driver’s License, CDL, creation and maintenance of documents and using equipment.
EDUCATION
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent plus special training usually gained through work experience, vocational programs or apprenticeships.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Job Location:
· The minimum working conditions for this position requires the employee to work both inside and outside, be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour, be exposed to temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour, be exposed to noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions in which one or more of the following symptoms affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
· Works in heavy traffic areas. Ability to set up traffic control for work in city streets, alleys and state highways.
· Take all actions necessary to maintain a safe work site and work environment. Ability to understand hazardous communication and work under all job safety requirements. Ability to understand and follow IOSHA safety regulations such as, but not limited to, confined space entry and traffic regulations and control.
Safety Equipment:
· The safety equipment required includes, but is not limited to, a hard hat, safety vest, respirator, confined space safety harness, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, depending on the task.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS
· Must have a valid Indiana Driver’s License and maintain it at all times.
· Must have good driving record, sufficient to be covered by city insurance as a driver while on duty.
· Must hold or have the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a Class B CDL with air brakes and tank endorsement and maintain at all times including but not limited to meeting all state and federal deadlines for renewal
· Obtaining a CS-1 Collection system Certification within thirty (30) months of hiring highly preferred.
RESIDENCY:
· Must reside in Bartholomew County or adjoining county within six (6) months of employment.
DRUG/ALCOHOL TESTING:
· This is a safety sensitive position and, as such, is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program, which includes: pre-employment testing, random testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
