SUMMARY OF POSITION
This position is for a PRN Pre-op / PACU or Operating Room RN in an ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center. No nights, weekends, holidays, or call. Pre-op/PACU or Operating Room experience is required, ophthalmology background is preferred. We are willing to train the right individual for the role. Strong IV skills are required. Two-three days a week preferred.
Responsibilities/General Duties/Requirements:
- Prepares patients for a variety of surgical procedures
- Recovers patients after conscious sedation procedures
- Assists in patient education during all phases of the patient’s experience at the Center, including thorough discharge instructions
- Assists RN staff with pre-operative patient phone calls to review patient health history, medication lists, and pre-surgical instructions
- Performs follow-up patient assessment by calling patients after surgery
- Works with nurse anesthetists in providing conscious sedation to patients
- Ascertains that there is an appropriate pre-anesthetic examination, recorded on the patient’s chart by the nurse anesthetists.
- Reviews the patient’s medical and surgical history, lab, ECG reports and appropriate consents, with anesthesia.
- Ability to read and interpret abnormal EKGs
- Takes an active role on committees within the organization.
- Maintains perioperative equipment and supplies
- Accountable for administration of drugs, including eye drops, oral medications, and intravenous solutions
- Ensures informed signed consents are completed prior to administration of sedation.
- Assists in Crash Cart Maintenance and Defibrillator Checks.
- Remains prepared and calm in emergency situations and institutes emergency procedures immediately when such occasions arise. Knows location of emergency call system, emergency supplies and equipment.
MINIMUM BACKGROUND & EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a graduate from a college or university and/or an accredited school of nursing with a current Missouri nursing license. Two years of outpatient Pre-Op/PACU or Operative Room experience is desired. BLS certification is required.
RNs with any ophthalmic experience are encouraged to apply.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL GUIDELINES:
- Physical guidelines: include the ability to stand/walk for up to ten (10) hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers; assist patients in and out of wheelchairs; push wheelchairs; assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table. Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. May be exposed to disagreeable odors.
- Hearing: adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions. Compensates for various noise levels; may be exposed to profane and ‘street’ language
- Speaking: must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone; able to effectively explain medical procedures in a level the patient and family understands.
- Vision: visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
