Job Description
The Environmental Engineer in the OSHE (Occupational Safety, Health and Environment) Office Branch is responsible for providing technical support to the Pollution Prevention Process Engineering Branch on all environmental matters including, but not limited to, air quality, water, waste water, solid waste, hazardous waste, and hazardous materials. The incumbent is a technical consultant to analyze environmental discharges, emissions and waste streams in support of the reduction or prevention of pollution at the source through cost-effective changes in production, operation, and raw material use.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Investigation, planning, scheduling, managing, executing, reporting, accomplishment and technical direction of broad and difficult environmental engineering studies and projects with a minimum of technical and supervisory direction.
- Prepares documentation (reports, procedures, technical specifications).
- Serve as Project engineer (develops, designs, justifies and implements projects) to acquire new systems, equipment, facilities, devices, methods or modify exiting equipment, etc to prevent pollution during operations. This includes coordinating efforts with other departments as well as contractors (reviews, evaluates and recommends changes in designs, projects, etc).
- Acts as troubleshooter in identification and resolution of problems encountered during installation/testing of new equipment, foundry equipment and other environmental systems used in the facility (checkout, troubleshooting, development of detailed designs and plans for remedial action and monitoring repair efforts to ensure proper accomplishment and compliance with environmental regulations).
- Shall comply with all NFPC procedures for safety, fall protection and hazardous materials.
Qualifications Required for the Position
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. Area of expertise should reside in Environmental, Mechanical, Manufacturing or equivalent.
- Experience with air emissions.
- Wide range of mechanical engineering theories, concepts, principles, standards and methods sufficient to formulate, execute, advise on, and explain recommendations or solutions to modify standard practices, equipment, devices, processes, and techniques.
- Reviews material substitution and new material requests to determine the effect of any release to the environment, industrial waste water treatment plant or the sanitary sewer system, as well as its pollution prevention potential.
