Job Overview: The Director of Communications and Community Outreach will develop and lead communications strategies and public relations for the office of Boston District 9 City Councilor Liz Breadon. Duties include drafting external communications (including press releases and policy statements), managing and strengthening the Councilor’s social media presence, and actively engaging with Allston-Brighton residents and stakeholders to integrate grassroots priorities with City-level initiatives.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish and implement communications, media relations, and public involvement strategies to provide timely and understandable information to the residents of Allston-Brighton, enhance community engagement, and effectively communicate the Councilor’s legislative priorities
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the Councilor’s office and the media, build and maintain strong working relationships with journalist and media contacts
- Draft and edit speeches, press releases, media quotes, op-eds/letters to the editor, and other external communication materials to reflect the Councilor’s position on key issues
- Work with community organizations and stakeholders in Allston-Brighton to integrate the ongoing grassroots work being done in D9 with work being done at the City Council level
- Design and implement a social media strategy, manage all the Councilor’s social media accounts, update the Councilor’s official website, and draft regular newsletter content
- Work with the Councilor and her staff to develop a policy-focused materials (graphics, one-pagers, e-blasts, etc.) to succinctly convey the Councilor’s legislative initiatives to the general public
- Provide constituent services and assist with district case work as necessary
- Attend community events, Council meetings, hearings/briefs, and other events to collect and utilize photos and content
Qualifications
- Extensive experience creating and executing communications strategies in a highly-visible setting required. Ideal candidate will have minimum 2-3 years experience overseeing communications for a government, nonprofit, or advocacy organization
- Strong written and communications skills, media relations, and social media management necessary, as well as basic graphic design
- Preferred candidates will have some experience with community organizing, or engaging diverse populations around specific issues or initiatives
- Knowledge of City, State, and Allston-Brighton issues, including current events and key legislative priorities
- Ability to travel to District 9 for community events as needed
- Experience with tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite, Squarespace, and CRM platforms
- Self-starter able to work independently and work effectively in a fast-paced environment

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $58,000.00 - $66,000.00 per year
