Provides ongoing health care to agency residents, which includes health assessments, treatment of minor health problems, counseling and health education relevant to adolescent growth and development and related problems. Acts as liaison to other health care providers in the community in relation to identified health problems or needs.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
- Conducts initial health assessment by physical examination and obtains medical history from all detention center and Sheltercare clients within 5 days of admission. Maintains all health records on children according to federal and state standards.
- Gives medication and performs treatment recommended by medical provider(s). Performs first aid measures for simple injuries and illnesses.
- Instructs childcare supervisory staff in providing medication and treatment prescribed by a doctor. Follows up to ensure that all instructions are being followed.
- Provides health and personal hygiene education to detention home clients in relation to issues pertinent to adolescent growth and development.
- Administers and supervises the dispensing of all prescription and over the counter medication. Develops and implements procedures in this area. Checks living unit medication logs to ensure that detainees are receiving the proper medication, dosage, and at the correct times.
- Performs other duties as required
- Attends team meetings.
- Performs medical on call services
- Provides medical crisis response as needed.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of nursing and clinical policies and procedures; good knowledge of approved medical terminology and abbreviations; good knowledge of the function, use, maintenance, and safety precautions of all equipment used; ability to clinically evaluate patients (residents) before medicating and recommending additional care; good knowledge of adolescent health problems, growth and developmental needs; strong ability to work with at-risk juveniles; strong ability to use creative methods to provided nursing care as needed; ability to monitor residents on a variety of medications; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to provide nursing services to difficult and complex residents; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships between staff, management, the Commission, administration, physicians, residents and outside professionals; ability to chart accurately, legibly, and complete all entries on medical records and controlled substance inventories.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have an Associate’s degree; current Registered Nurse licensure with the State Board of Nursing, Commonwealth of Virginia and three years of experience working with adolescent patients or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to pass a physical examination, drug test and the following criminal background checks: Virginia State Police, Child Protective Services and Federal Bureau of Investigations.
