Position Specific Summary
The Community Service Officer position at the City of Tucson’s Police Department responds to and investigates non-emergency crimes, accidents, and dispatched calls. Provides front-facing customer service to members of the public at police facilities. Engages in field duties that do not involve enforcement of state laws, investigation of violent crimes, or responding to emergencies.
Work is performed under the supervision of a Police Sergeant. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Calls for Service (40%) - Essential
Investigates non-violent crimes by interviewing witnesses and victims, dusting for fingerprints, gathering, tagging and storing evidence, taking photographs, confirming status of stolen property, initiating recovery procedures, and preparing reports. Testifies in court about actions performed when required.
Traffic Investigations (20%) - Essential
Responds to and investigates traffic collisions by securing the scene, providing point control, clearing the roadway, interviewing drivers and witnesses, arranging for medical care if necessary, taking photographs, entering information into a computer and preparing reports. Testifies in court about actions performed when required.
Customer Service (15%) - Essential
Provides customer service by answering the telephone, responds to requests for information, and refers callers to other agencies and resources. Gathers, records, and enters information to complete police reports.
Proactive Patrol (10%) - Essential
Conducts proactive patrols at city parks and businesses and recovers located property. Enforces parking ordinances by issuing tickets, warnings, and towing vehicles. Participates in missing person searches. Directs traffic for collision scenes, special events, and traffic congestion.
Outreach (10%) - Essential
Attends neighborhood meetings to provide crime trend information and prevention techniques. Attends recruiting events to enhance the image of the police department and seek new applicants.
Other Duties (5%) - Non-Essential
Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned. Provides field training for new Community Safety Officers.
Working Conditions
Schedule will include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Work will include some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazards. Incumbents will be frequently exposed to severe weather conditions to include excessive heat and heavy rain.

Minimum Hiring Salary: $18.15
Dependent upon experience, qualifications, and successful completion of any applicable job training**
Full Hourly Range: $18.15 - 31.31 USD

The hiring process includes an in-person written assessment that is scheduled to be administered on Saturday, July 27, 2024. There is no remote option for this assessment.
The CSO Academy is scheduled to start on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Important details regarding the Community Service Officer position:
- The starting rate for this position is $21.00 per hour.
- Incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Overtime will be required as necessary.
- The training process is extensive; incumbents will attend an academy that is 9 weeks long and requires a high level of commitment and time dedication.
- The probation period is 18 months.
- Work is fast-paced and often stressful. It requires the ability to adjust quickly to changing job assignments and the ability to safeguard confidential information.
- Incumbents will often be exposed to highly sensitive and graphic content to include written documentation, photos and other evidence collected as part of investigative reports.
- This position requires the ability to safely drive both sedan and SUV-type vehicles during daylight and nighttime hours. This requirement also includes times of inclement weather.
- Incumbents will be frequently exposed to severe weather conditions to include excessive heat and heavy rain.
Candidates placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List must successfully pass the following:
- An extensive background investigation, including local, state and national criminal and fingerprint checks
- Motor Vehicle History
- Pre-employment medical testing which includes: Basic Physical, Long Audio Test, Respirator Physical, Hep B Vaccine, MMR, TB Skin Test, Non-NIDA Drug Test, 30 lb Lift Test
