Position Overview
This position is for highly skilled individual that will work as part of the engineering team to provide technical machine & design engineering supervision, machine & process improvements, and ensure the daily priorities of equipment needs are being addressed. The candidate must have good solid technical expertise, good communication and writing skills, and be a good team player. The position will also support process development and manufacturing scale-up for new products and machinery. The candidate should have experience in film/web handling, machine design of cast, coating or calendering equipment of thin films using dip coating and or melt extrusion lines. The position will interface closely with the company’s manufacturing, R&D, and quality teams.
Job Responsibilities:
· Developing moderate to complex machine designs for new products as well as support improvement projects for legacy machinery.
· Analyze technical problems and develop solutions independently & or with input from various team members.
· Works to identify root cause of manufacturing failures using structured problem solving. Applies root cause fixes to prevent reoccurrence.
· Evaluates machine logic, electromechanical systems and process controls to troubleshoot equipment.
· Oversee installation, operation, maintenance/repair to ensure that machines are installed and functioning according to specifications.
· Analyze processes to determine where & how application of equipment can be made.
· Design test control apparatus, equipment & develop procedures for testing products.
· Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles.
· Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
· Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
· Establish or coordinate the maintenance & safety procedures, service schedule to maintain machines & equipment in the prescribed condition.
· Work closely with the maintenance department to ensure all equipment is maintained to a high level of readiness.
· Analyze and address chronic repetitive equipment failures and downtime issues.
· Assess and maintain equipment safety standards and address hazards.
· Identify technical issues, perform root cause analysis, generate findings & solutions.
· Identify opportunities to improve process operations, product quality or reduce costs.
· Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
· Develop and manage multiple continuous improvement projects.
· Maintain accurate equipment & manufacturing engineering documentation including visual work instructions and training.
· Work with vendors and suppliers to meet the project needs.
· Provides training and process expertise for product processing in specific areas such as process development, tooling development and validation.
· Manages engineering project teams and coordinates activities.
· Mentors' junior engineers and maintenance technicians.
· Lay out and manage the installation, integration of manufacturing equipment and processes.
· Develop & utilize project management documents such as plans, timelines, budgets.
· Ability to provide hands-on equipment trouble shooting.
Education/Experience & Preferred Skills:
- 5+ years’ experience as a Machine Design Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in a chemical/industrial/manufacturing company is preferred.
- Must have experience in web handling and machine design of cast, coating or calendering of thin films, dip coating, and or melt extrusion lines.
- Must have knowledge & experience of film/web-based process lines with multiple tension zones.
- Proficient in SolidWorks to fully design a moderate to complex machine is a must.
- Strong analytical thinking, good problem solving and Root Cause Analysis skills.
- Ability to resolve complex problems in a timely manner.
- Ability to multitask and engage in a fast-paced environment.
· Good people skills to interface with maintenance personnel, machine operators, operations supervisors and customers to solve problems.
- Ability to collaborate well with internal and external teams.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
· Proficient with Microsoft products, Excel, Word, and Project & coding in Excel a plus
· Experience with any of the following is considered a plus: textiles, dip coating, dip coating formulation, calendering, paste extrusion, melt extrusion, and fluoropolymers and their characteristics.
· Experience with web handling, tension controls, load cells, temperature controllers and thermocouples, motor drives– all a plus
· Knowledge of PLC programming
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability
- General knowledge of CNC machining a plus but not required.
- Proficient in GD&T.
- Willing to travel, infrequently.
