The City of Puyallup is hiring a Civil Engineer (Journey) to join its Capital Improvement Projects team. The priority application date is July 10th.

The successful candidate will provide professional and administrative engineering work in the Public Works Department, Capital Improvement Program (CIP) division. The primary responsibility is for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, reviewing, and evaluating public works projects within the CIP division.
Careful attention to detail is required to ensure that projects are completed on time and that work meets professional engineering standards and federal/state requirements. Work performance is reviewed for the quality and quantity of the results produced by personnel in the division. Frequent and considerable contact is maintained with engineering consultants, contractors, state and federal agency representatives, Council members, division personnel and the public. Work is performed primarily in an office setting with occasional visits to constructions sites in the field.

Working conditions for positions in this classification vary depending on department and division or section assignment. Work is performed primarily indoors in an engineering office environment, with work occasional outdoors for field site visits. Incumbents communicate verbally with others, both face to face and using the telephone, in order to respond to inquiries and complaints from customers and when conducting project-related public education activities. Incumbents are required to read and interpret construction drawings, maps and/or blueprints; to sit or stand for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will; and to review and/or check the work products of others when preparing, reviewing, checking and interpreting plans and/or construction drawings. Incumbents frequently use a computer keyboard, which requires repetitive arm/hand movement, to prepare written materials such as construction specifications, engineering reports, email messages, City Council packages and other correspondence, and when performing design functions. Incumbents communicate verbally in a group setting while conducting project-related public meetings, including evening meetings. During field inspections, incumbents walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces and to work in traffic, hear and respond to vehicle backup alarms; observe objects or people to monitor compliance with safety standards, such as when checking trench shoring and use of vests and hard hats; and work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Incumbents are required to discriminate among colors when preparing and/or reading maps with colors as the legend, and when reviewing computer-generated drawings; and to climb ladders or steps, use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body, and coordinate movement of more than one limb simultaneously when conducting field site visits.
SELECTION PROCESS

Hours of Work – Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one (1) hour lunch. Some after-hours meetings may be required. The City supports a telework policy that allows employees to work remote up to two days per week.
