The County of San Mateo is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Psychiatric Social Worker I/II - Marriage & Family Therapist I/II Forensic Mental Health

Correctional Health Services (CHS) therapists provide clinical mental health services utilizing Trauma Informed Care to inmates with mental illness, serious mental illness, or substance use disorders and/or cooccurring disorders of mental illness, serious mental illness, and chemical dependency. They also provide case management services and discharge planning by interviewing inmate patients to assess mental health needs and formulating treatment plans. They function as a team member in a multi-disciplinary work setting where they collaborate with Sheriff's Office staff to manage inmate patients' daily activities. Positions require some weekend hours.
Ideal Candidate
- A current license as either a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Marriage and Family Therapist.
- Solid clinical treatment, assessment, and diagnostic skills.
- Knowledge of principles, techniques and trends in counseling, psychotherapy, clinical case management, crisis management and various treatment modalities as they pertain to the justice involved adult population.
- Experience providing treatment for adults with serious mental illness.
- Experience delivering services to adult incarcerated persons who have co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Excellent documentation skills: progress notes, assessments, and treatment planning, etc.
- Demonstrated expertise, skill and interest in working with a broad range of clients of diverse cultures and backgrounds, such as Latino, Pacific Islander, African American, and LGBTQ, and an ability to provide culturally appropriate and proficient services.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with families, co-workers, other professionals, the Sheriff’s office, collaborative partners and the public.
- Extensive knowledge of available community resources within the County of San Mateo and its neighboring counties.
- Experience using electronic health/medical record systems (e.g. AVATAR, SOARIAN, Epic).
- Fluency in any of the threshold languages: Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin) or Russian and experience providing clinical services using bilingual skills.
- Experience working in a correctional facility and/or experience working with Law enforcement.
- Experience providing case management services for an inmate population.
- Demonstrated ability in providing clinical mental health services to an adult population with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders of mental illness, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders.
Example of Duties
- Perform initial diagnostic evaluation noting behavioral symptoms which may indicate a psychiatric or co-occurring disorder.
- Perform risk assessments.
- Crisis intervention.
- Make client referrals and plan discharge procedures.
- Collect and evaluate psychiatric information such as case histories, behavior patterns and family relationships.
- Work as a psychiatric team member with other treatment disciplines.
- Utilize trauma informed care and other evidence-based practices.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification
Psychiatric Social Worker I/II:
- Registration with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Intern (Associate Clinical Social Worker).
- An individual hired in this classification must become licensed within six years from the date of employment as a Clinical Social Worker issued by the State of California.
- For Psychiatric Social Worker II, current California license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker is required.
Marriage & Family Therapist I/II:
- Registration with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Intern (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist).
- An individual hired in this classification must become licensed within six years from the date of employment as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California.
- For Marriage & Family Therapist II, current California license as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is required.
Education and Experience
- A typical way to qualify is a Master's degree in Social Work, Social Welfare or a closely related field.
Security Clearance
- Positions in Correctional Health require that the applicant obtain and maintain a security clearance as a condition of employment.
