Director of Nursing
Job Summary:
Description: Registered Nurses (RN’s) are responsible for the direct care of the residents, under supervision of Director of Nursing, according to facility policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
1) Has a current Registered Nurse license in good standing, issued from the State of Minnesota; Maintain current licensure
2) Demonstrates safe and competent practice to complete position responsibilities within the RN Scope of Practice, as defined by the State of Minnesota.
3) Able to perform job responsibilities of the job, within the state and federal rules and regulations that cover the practices within the facility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
4) Keeps updated on new developments in nursing through continuing education.
5) Maintain current CPR certification
6) Must meet all screening requirements: pass drug screening, (if applicable), pass criminal background investigation and reference inquiry.
7) Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Assuring Resident Safety
- Follows resident plan of care: Utilize time efficiently to assure completion of duties and responsibilities in allotted time frame. Project sound judgment in delivery of care that is cost efficient but does not jeopardize safe, effective care delivery. Follow company policies and procedures to ensure a safe, caring, comfortable, and clean environment. Utilize all appropriate, available resources for resident, family, and responsible party. Update the physician and/or nurse practitioner, NP, as well as family/responsible party regarding the resident status. In an emergency, call 911 as appropriate. Network in collaboration with physician, nurse practitioner, and/or other health care professionals regarding relevant information to changing plan of care. Question and seek clarification of unclear physician/NP orders.
- Delivers resident care: Deliver and maintain optimum resident care and comfort by demonstrating knowledge and skills of current nursing practices. Transcribe physician/NP orders appropriately, accurately and timely. Question and seek clarification of unclear physician/NP orders. Perform only those activities that are within the scope of acceptable RN practice. Notify the physician/NP if orders are not carried out and document the event appropriately. Follow company policies and procedures, and appropriately project sound judgment. Ensure accurate and complete documentation of all medical records and reporting forms (hard copy and computer based, if applicable). Promptly respond to call lights, alarms, and other resident needs.
- Monitor: Monitors the certified nursing assistants or TMAs, performance on a given shift/unit. Networks and provides counsel to nursing assistants or TMAs to provide quality resident care. Network with DON or Designee regarding CNA/TMA performance concerns, violation of policy or rules. On the other hand, give praise to CNA/TMA for exceptional resident care and job performance. Ensure proper staffing by calling Staffing Manager for staff not reporting to work. Assist in orientation of new employees. Support and follow through with management team goals.
- Customer Service: Provide good, compassionate resident care services. Establish and maintain positive interactions with internal and external customers, including co-workers and direct reports. Take responsibility for resolving CNA/TMA and other customers’ issues and concerns striving for a win-win outcome. Noting that customers include residents, families, vendors and other employees.
- Resident’s Rights: Demonstrate strong ethical practice regarding individual /resident rights as stated in the “Resident Bill of Rights” and company policy. Demonstrate both sensitivity and appropriate responsiveness to each resident’s “end of life” wishes including Hospice.
- Resident comfort and safety: Demonstrate safe practices in regard to resident’s comfort and safety by applying knowledge of proper body mechanics for self and resident. Practice and promote adherence to company safety policies and procedures. Promote a restraint-free, “no manual lift” environment.
- Pharmacy Knowledge: Maintain an updated base in pharmacology. Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures governing the six rights of medication administration. Demonstrate knowledge of drug reactions, sensitivities and nursing interventions. Assure that narcotics are accounted for properly. Apply adult learning principles when counseling individuals, family members or responsible party regarding the resident’s medication regimen.
- Lab values: Recognize normal as well as abnormal lab values. Network with physician/NP and other interdisciplinary team members regarding lab values as appropriate.
- Infection Prevention and Control: Demonstrate working knowledge of infection prevention and control policy, procedures and practices.
- Continuing Education/Staff Development: Recognize self-evaluation and self development as important tools in maintaining high standards of care and professionalism. Seek and provide peer support and consultation. Participate in and attend facility /nursing meetings and in-services as required. Utilize outside sources for required continuing education credits.
- Compliance: Must adhere to the Company’s Code of Conduct and Business Ethics policy, including documentation and reporting responsibilities.
- Physical and Sensory requirements (With or Without Aid of Mechanical Devices): Walking/mobility, reaching, bending, fine hand coordination, grasping, pushing medication carts, pulling, use of equipment and repositioning residents; ability to hear and respond to pages, call lights and alarms; ability to distinguish smells, tastes, and temperature; ability to read, and write; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to verbally communicate with residents and others; ability to understand and apply training and in-service education; ability to remain calm in emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.
Position Responsibilities:

ADON Specific Tasks:
- Observes, monitors, and supervises, in with collaboration with DON, floor nursing staff performance of best practice, competencies, and implementation of regulations/policies and procedures.
- Assist floor nursing staff with any re-education/re-training of daily tasks.
- Works in collaboration with DON to develop training/competency curriculum, and implements routine in-service/training/education required per regulations.
- Assists DON with nursing staff performance reviews.
- Gathers resident/staff infection data, maintains monthly infection logs, and support Antibiotic Stewardship program
- Tracks PRN psychotropic medications per regulations
- Completes 6 week monitoring form for psychiatric medication additions/changes
- Completes and maintains Informed Consent forms for psychotropic medications
- Lead nurse for all floor nursing staff
- Completes appointment set up and transportation when HUC/RSD not present
- Completes monthly MAR/TAR/PO review/2nd checks
- Coordinates providers schedules for in-house visits and helps assist during their rounds
- Prepares Care Conference summary and attends weekly Care Conferences
- Weekly hazardous waste inspection and documentation
- Completes admission nursing assessment and necessary nursing admission documentation
- Assists with routine COVID swabbing/outbreak management for staff and residents as needed
- Ensure there is RN coverage 8 hours a day (Monday-Friday); per regulations
- Communicates with DON on nursing staff concerns
- When DON Designee, shall address any DON tasks needing immediate attention or resolution
- Functions as the DON Designee in the absence of the DON; per regulations
- Equally shares on-staff staffing coordination, questions, and coverage responsibilities with DON (schedule to be determined by DON/ADON jointly). Shift coverage as needed (daily, monthly, emergency).
- Creates and maintains nursing schedule. Communicates staffing coverage needs proactively. Organizes schedule coverage. Collaborates with DON to resolve floor staff schedule conflicts, call-ins, and PTO requests. Monitor and communicate staffing concern/patterns to DON.
- Complete quarterly and as needed audits, per QAPI, QAA, POC
- Attend and participate in assigned meetings and committees (ex: management meetings, safe patient handling, ergonomics, infection prevention, behavioral health)

Pay: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
