We are hiring Teacher Assistants for our Rise and Shine Early Learning locations located throughout Manatee County.
These are 10-month positions.
Rates of pay:
- Teacher Assistants with CDA/FCCPC - $17.95/hour
- Teacher Assistants with high school diploma/GED - $14.00/hour
Position Summary/Objective:
Teacher Assistants are responsible for assisting the Teacher in the implementation of the curriculum; supervision and instruction of children to ensure developmentally appropriate practice and activities that will stimulate social, physical, emotional and intellectual development of each child.
Essential Functions: (Duties and Responsibilities)
- Assist the Teachers in completing all developmental assessments, screenings and observations of all children within 45 days of enrollment.
- Assists in classroom learning as needed during the day.
- Ensures classroom is orderly and all supplies/equipment, toys, furniture and chairs are put away at the end of school day.
- Assists the Teacher in the implementation of the curriculum and daily schedule and lesson plan.
- Assists the Teacher in the interaction of children in the classroom in order to aid in the educational, social and emotional development of children by helping the teacher prepare lesson plans and design learning activities.
- Assists the Teacher in the daily evaluation/observation of children for all areas of development.
- Assists the Teacher in the selection and design of educational materials to enhance children’s learning experiences.
- Supervises and assists the children with menu/snack times, hygiene care, rest periods, outdoor play activities, and mealtime clean up.
- Assists the Teacher as needed with home visits to encourage parent’s participation in their children’s education.
- Provides direct supervision of classroom activities in the absence of the Teacher.
- Works with volunteers in the classroom.
- Assists in obtaining and documenting in-kind contributions, in accordance with Head Start policies and procedures.
- Assists Teachers with preparing and documenting children’s records; including anecdotal, child’s attendance, progress, problems, health and parent contacts.
- Interacts positively with the children during activities and throughout the day.
- Assists with cleanliness, which may include light housekeeping duties and upkeep of the classroom to ensure safety.
- Assists with planning, implementation and supervision of a large group outdoor play activities and ensures safety of children while outdoors.
- Attends all required training, including pre-service and in-service in accordance with the Agency and Head Start/Early Head Start professional development policies and procedures.
- Must be willing to transfer from one location to another as needed. Three days’ notice will be provided unless the transfer is occurring due to an emergency.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Must have a CDA (Child Development Associate) or be enrolled in a program leading to a CDA, an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.
Training Requirements:
- State of FL 45 hour Child Care Training Course must be completed during the first year of employment.
- In-service trainings held throughout the year.
- First Aid and CPR.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Must have excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
- Must have demonstrated skills working in a Microsoft windows environment and be able to use the Agency software within three months of hire.
- Must have a working knowledge and demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of low-income people.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unites of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving standardized situations.
Licenses/Certificates/Screenings:
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Must have reliable transportation for work related travel.
- Must be insurable under Step Suncoast’s organizational policies.
- Pre-employment drug screening required.
- Must pass a Level II criminal background check.
- Must agree to ongoing random drug/alcohol screening.

- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include, close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
Work environment:
- Work site will include a variety of settings based on work responsibilities including classroom, client home settings, and other settings as needed to perform work responsibilities.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Expected hours of work:
- Hours of work and days are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Employee may be called upon outside these hours to complete home visits or attend other functions of the position or agency as needed.
Travel:
- Local travel to client homes, other site locations, and other agency meetings/trainings.

Retirement Plan - After one year of service, Step Up Suncoast will contribute 8% of your gross salary to a retirement account. You may start contributing yourself immediately upon hire.
Vacation – For the first three years of service, employees receive the equivalent of 2.6 weeks of vacation leave. The leave accumulates each pay period and is calculated on the number of hours worked. New employees are eligible to take a vacation after their 90-day probationary period is complete.
The accumulation rate increases after 3, 9, 15, and 24 years of service.
Please note: Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Cook/Food Transporters, and Program Secretaries do not accrue vacation time.
Sick – Sick leave accumulates each pay period and is calculated on the number of hours worked. You can accrue up to 480 hours. New employees are eligible to take sick time after their 90-day probationary period is complete.
Holidays – We get 13 paid holidays per year – New Year’s Day, MLK, Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, 2 days at Thanksgiving, 2 days at Christmas.
Personal time off – We get two paid personal days per year. (One day if hired after April 1, zero personal days if hired after October 1)
