Essential Functions:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Counselor is responsible for screening and providing orientation for all new agency participants. The incumbent also conducts clinical evaluations, provides referrals, facilitates individual and/or group sessions.
Intake/Addiction Counselor Responsibilities:
- Completes comprehensive assessments for prospective participants that includes substance use history, mandated treatment requirements and other relevant clinical information to determine level of care placement.
- Utilize DSM-V criteria to provide an accurate substance use diagnosis that substantiates level of care placement and other recommendations.
- Develops individualized treatment plans with person-centered language and goals.
- Use clinical skills and motivational interviewing strategies to engage referral and strengthen motivation for treatment.
- Conduct urinalysis or breathalyzer screenings at the time of assessment to corroborate clinical information
- Facilitate appropriate group assignment and communication with primary counselor to coordinate services.
- Verify and monitor any outpatient group waiting lists and current group census in order to coordinate care.
- Complete clinical evaluations, status reports and/or response to referral documents for participants and their respective referral sources that indicates participation, progress in treatment/services or other relevant information
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to better support the needs and goals of participants.
- Participate in individual and group supervision as scheduled by Program Manager.
- Attend agency and outside trainings for maintenance, enhancement of knowledge and skills.
- Ensure that all guidelines, regulations and reporting requirements pertaining to the Substance Abuse Treatment program are in compliance with SUPR Licensing Regulation 2060, ASAM criteria and departmental policies.
- Conduct individual sessions and/or counseling groups/intakes as necessary.
- Adhere to professional standards of ethics and agency policies.
- Ability to work at least two evenings per week.
- Participate in agency fundraising efforts as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager.
Intake Counselor Qualifications:
- Must be familiar with DHS regulations (2060 & 2090), DMS-V, and ASAM placement criteria.
- Must have the clinical skills necessary to identify and assess problems related to or attributable to substance use or other related issues.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred and have a thorough understanding of social and cultural patterns of Hispanics and other minorities.
- Knowledge of MS Office applications.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of computer keyboard.
- Must be sensitive and aware of current issues in the field of substance use.
- Possession of valid Illinois driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle in course of employment.
- H.A.S. requires all staff to work onsite.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Services or related field, from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval preferred.
