The Juvenile Surveillance Officer position is a part-time entry level position under the supervision of the Field Unit Supervisor. The Juvenile Surveillance Officer is responsible for assisting with evening curfew checks for juveniles under the supervision of the Juvenile Probation Department and for assisting with various other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts evening curfew checks for juveniles under the supervision of the Juvenile Probation Department.
Monitors juvenile compliance with probation, detention or court orders through home visits, in accordance with the policies and standards established by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer.
Cooperates with probation officers and staff in assisting with supervising juveniles on supervision and performing additional related services as may be requested by other officers.
Observes juvenile’s physical, medical, and emotional condition during evening curfew checks.
Documents and maintains chronological recordings and case records for office files and court presentations as required by the Court, the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer, and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
Assists in transporting juveniles to placement, as well as scheduled appointments for court, school, work, medical treatment, and counseling.
Provides supervision to juveniles during court hearings, counseling groups, and after-hours programming as required.
Assists in completing regular vehicle maintenance inspections for the Juvenile Probation Department’s vehicle fleet.
Completes necessary paperwork and ensures that information provided is accurate.
Assists with supervision of juveniles in the custody of the Tom Green County Juvenile Detention Center when necessary.
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of applicable laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, and procedures regarding the supervision of juveniles approved by the Tom Green County Juvenile board and governing the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
Ability to maintain mental capacity in making decisions using good judgement and based off policy; effectively deal with angry, assaultive and out of control juvenile residents and sometimes dangerous situations where exposure to contagious and communicable diseases may occur while on duty; and ability to restrain a juvenile weighing up to 250 pounds.
Skill in written and oral communication and interpersonal relations with departmental employees, other county employees and officials, other law enforcement agencies, juveniles, and the general public; and computer operation using standard word processing software.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 45 pounds regularly and over 45 pounds occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, walking, reaching, handling, and smelling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily within a jail environment with frequent local travel. Must be able to react professionally and safely under potential or actual volatile conditions. May be required to physically restrain violent youths.
Education and/or Experience Required:
High school graduate or equivalent, no criminal history, and at least 21 years of age.
Certificates and Licenses:
Texas Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification: Must pass state test within 6 months of employment to be certified; certified First Aid/CPR.
Must have a valid driver’s license, motor vehicle liability insurance, personal liability insurance and a personal vehicle.
Additional Information:
Must be able to work a variety of shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required.
Must be able to pass a criminal background check with no disqualifying criminal history indicated.
