Operates a variety of equipment and manual tools in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City streets and storm drainage facilities and systems; performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in maintaining roadways, traffic signs and signals, mowing grass in summer and salting roads in winter, and clearing trash and debris.
Determines the locations of drainage structures from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
Assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains as required to effectuate street or storm drainage system repair.
Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes storm drainage, mains, gates, and fittings on repair of services and installation of services, fire hydrants, and related infrastructure.
Cuts and maintains right of ways within City limits.
Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and catch basin cleaning, main and pipe repairing, laying, and back filling.
Mows grass in right of way; trims trees.
Fixes street signs and pot holes; changes street lights.
Picks up trash; picks up dead animals in road; and clears road debris.
Treats roads for wintry conditions.
Inspects and/or repairs streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the system are functioning properly.
Performs park maintenance duties as assigned.
Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in street maintenance and repair.
Assures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, street signage, etc.
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and ExperienceRequires a High School diploma or equivalent; one (1) year of related work experience in construction, maintenance, repair of streets, or repair of storm drains; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Requires a valid State of Georgia driver's license; commercial driver's license (or the ability to obtain one). Desires flagging license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
- Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in operating construction vehicles (such as dump trucks and utility trucks), equipment (such as compressors, pumps, and mowers), power tools (such as sanders), and hand tools (such as wrenches).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to follow safety rules and guidelines.
The work is heavy work and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.
Work Environment:
Work is regularly performed outdoors under various weather conditions: frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration; frequently near moving mechanical parts; occasionally in high, precarious places; occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Requires being on-call as scheduled.
