CLASSIFICATION TITLE: CIVIL ENGINEER I
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide professional engineering services and consultations to the Public Works Department and other departments, including assessing water and sewer impact fees and storm water fees, approving storm water management plans, and reviewing public and private building plans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Reviews storm water management plans; evaluates plans for compliance with established City codes and ordinances; determines water and sewer impact fees and other charges;
Reviews complex residential and commercial building site development plans for compliance with City codes, Division requirements, and City objectives; approves preconstruction plans.
Reviews City construction projects for good engineering and cost effectiveness; advises on capital improvement projects and reports.
Provides information and technical assistance concerning code requirements; discusses problem areas with property owners and contractors; makes safety suggestions and recommends solutions to problems; responds to questions or complaints concerning building codes or code violations.
Attends and participates in numerous City meetings with consulting engineers on public and private projects; consults with other divisions about engineering and operational problem.
Maintains records of all work activities; files reports, building plans, and other relevant documents in proper location.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, construction plan review comments, water/sewer tap ticket, capacity commitment letter, county fee letter or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, construction plans, storm water reports, specifications, contract documents, subdivision plats, ordinances, code books, maps, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with City officials and employees, contractors, architects, engineers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.
Maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards; maintains an awareness of new construction methods, materials, inspection practices, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
