Opportunity Overview
Summary: We are confidentially seeking an experienced Senior Project Accountant to join our Construction and Engineering Firm near Long Island City, NY. This position reports to the president of the firm and is an opportunity to move into a Controllership position. The ideal candidate will be pivotal in shaping and communicating the financial landscape of our organization to Senior Management. As a key financial strategist, the Senior Project Accountant must effectively engage with ownership to provide clear and insightful analysis of the business's financial status. The Senior Project Accountant must be capable of assessing the viability of new initiatives or financial commitments at any point in time.
The Senior Project Accountant will be responsible for building and nurturing relationships with financial institutions, skillfully negotiating on behalf of our firm. This role involves close collaboration with Project Managers to manage budgets, oversee accounts receivable and payables, perform general bookkeeping, and ensure accurate payroll and benefits administration. The ideal candidate will be both analytical and proactive, driving financial performance while supporting the firm's overall strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Assess and communicate the financial status of the organization to Ownership on a weekly basis.
- Drive a timely close process, financial consolidations, quarterly reviews, and annual audits in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Prepare, review, and maintain financial statements, management reporting, and Initial Budget Worksheets and Plans.
- Oversee payroll and benefits administration, coordinating with the HR department.
Project Accounting:
- Manage the full project accounting life cycle, from project setup to closeout.
- Partner with Project Managers to provide budget management and financial performance transparency throughout the project lifecycle.
- Set up new projects in the system, review contracts and proposals, and ensure accuracy of fees and expenses billed to clients.
- Coordinate contractor and other invoice reviews, approval, and posting, and monitor accounts receivable and collections for accuracy and alignment with contracts.
- Conduct full post-mortem assessments on each completed project to determine over/under budget categories and contribute to corrective action protocols and policy improvement to further optimize project budgets.
Policy and Process Optimization:
- Develop and implement financial controls and accounting policies to support company growth and ensure financial statement accuracy.
- Ensure processes are in place to drive budget transparency on projects for early identification of issues and budget creep.
- Lead efforts to optimize accounting processes and financial systems with an emphasis on automation and efficiency.
- Streamline financial operations to maximize the timeliness and accuracy of all close procedures and reporting requirements.
Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and review periodic financial statements, presenting findings to the President with detailed budget vs. actual analysis.
- Develop key accounting processes to provide financial insights for executive decision-making.
- Utilize financial data to monitor and analyze operating results against the plan and provide insights for potential improvements.
Collaboration and Documentation:
- Collaborate with network engineers, system administrators, and other IT professionals to maintain a secure and efficient network environment.
- Maintain detailed documentation of financial configurations, policies, and changes.
- Create documentation for troubleshooting and incident response procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- Experience in the professional services industry, especially in Architecture, Engineering, or project accounting environments is a plus.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks and strong Excel skills.
- Detail-oriented, self-sufficient, and with excellent communication skills.
- 7-15 years of progressive accounting experience in a professional services company, ideally in architecture or engineering.
- Well-versed in project-based billing, WIP reporting, and other revenue-related accounting concepts in a client service business.
- Proactive, motivated, polished, and sharp.
- Ability and willingness to commute to the office 4 days per week.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $80,070.00 - $100,577.00 per year
