Role Summary
Newly created due to growth, we are seeking an Underwriter to come and join our Commercial Casualty division within the United States.
Role Accountabilities
- Study insurance proposals.
- Gather and assess background information, including proposal forms and survey report specialists where appropriate, in order to effectively assess the risk involved.
- Calculate possible risks and decide how much individuals or organisations should pay for insurance (the premium).
- Decide whether the risk should be shared with a reinsurer.
- Visit brokers or potential customers and prepare quotes.
- Liaise with specialists, such as surveyors and risk engineers, for risk assessment, and develop good working relationships with brokers.
- Negotiate terms with policyholders or their brokers and draw up contracts.
- Ensure that premiums are competitive and that accounts remain profitable.
- Understanding the pricing mechanisms and pricing adequacy for risks globally.
- Specify conditions to be imposed on different types of policies and ensure adequacy of warranty controls.
- Write policies and help develop policy wordings.
- Keep detailed and accurate records of policies underwritten and decisions made.
- Work closely with senior underwriter in developing new practices and new underwriting ideas as well as opening up new markets and opportunities.
- Use formal reporting mechanisms, as defined by Risk and Compliance or Internal Audit, to promptly notify relevant parties of any perceived new risks or failures of existing control measures.
- At all times, consider the effect of any actions taken on the customers of the Company, with the intention of improving their experience.
- All employees must endeavour to provide accurate, complete and appropriate data, in accordance with the Company's data policy, as part of their roles and responsibilities at all times.
Role Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in underwriting specialising in Commercial Casualty.
- Degreed educated.
- Experience working for an insurer, MGA or Lloyd’s syndicate.
