Established in 1988, The Dominican Women's Development Center (DWDC) stands as the epi-center of women, children, youth, and family focused activity in the upper Manhattan communities. A non-profit, membership organization, The Dominican Women's Development Center’s mission is to empower women and families to advance gender equality and social justice. To this end, DWDC has developed a matrix of program services that includes; Anti-Domestic Violence, Educational Development, a Home-based early head start Program, Health Promotion Program and recently open Day Care.
DWDC’s Nuevo Amanecer Anti-Domestic Violence Program was founded in 1998, and created to empower Latina women who are victims of domestic violence in order for them to gain control of and make informed decisions about their lives. DWDC, Nuevo Amanecer has an excellent track record of successfully providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services to women victims of intimate partner violence & domestic violence for the past eighteen years.
Position: Domestic Violence Advocate/Counselor
Status: Full Time, 35 hours per week
Expected Start Date: ASAP
Annual Salary. - $48,000
The Domestic Violence Advocate/Counselor will be providing safety planning, case management, counseling, crisis intervention and advocacy to primarily immigrant domestic violence survivors.
Position Description:
Conduct intakes, comprehensive assessments and goal setting focused on survivors needs.
Develop short and long term, client driven and trauma informed strategies to meet survivors' needs in the areas of housing, public benefits, employment, financial management, etc.
Provides case management to include: crisis intervention, support, resources, referrals and safety planning to victims of intimate partner violence based on individual need.
Acts as liaison between police, courts and victim.
Accompanies victims to court and other appointments as needed. Provide translation as necessary.
Develops a familiarity and connection with local schools, after-school programs, DTA, healthcare providers, education resources, job training programs, housing resources, parenting groups and individuals and their children who have survived domestic violence. Provide referrals to services and trainings, and help participants stay on track to achieve their goals.
Identify needs and provide advocacy on issues such as criminal/civil justice remedies, (including letters of support and/or affidavits of support).
Co-Facilitate a weekly support group in Spanish
Document services and case information. Documentation includes collect evidence of abuse that could aid with civil legal remedies and/or prosecutions.
Participate in supervision, case planning conferences, Staff agency meeting and trainings
Collaborate with partners, including the Manhattan Family Justice Center, NYPD, the District Attorney's Office and other community and city agencies in efforts to prevent intimate partner violence and respond to survivors' needs and right to self-determination.
Participate in community outreach, awareness campaigns, special events and /or educational workshops as needed.
Additional related duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, forward-thinking, energetic, and hard-working.
BA in social work, criminal justice or related field required.
Counseling and advocacy experience preferred, especially with immigrant communities.
Knowledge of trauma and strong commitment to social justice.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Fluency in English/Spanish.
Proven ability to work collaboratively and to interact with management and program staff.
Knowledge working with diverse and underserved communities preferred.
Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, empowerment perspective.
Social Media savvy.
