CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The Animal Shelter Technician series is utilized in the Animal Services Division of the Sheriff’s Office. Animal Shelter Technician Trainee is the training-level classification in the series. This position is in a training capacity and under close supervision, learns to perform routine clerical, technical, and animal contact duties related to the support of the operations of the Animal Services Division. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of positions at the I or II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.
Positions in the Animal Shelter Technician classification series are flexibly staffed and positions at the I and II level are normally filled by advancement from the next lower level, after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience which meet the qualifications for and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

Some duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities may be performed in a learning capacity for entry-level (I Level) positions.
In a training capacity:-
Accepts and releases animals to and from the County animal shelter; places and transfers animals to appropriate shelter areas according to species and special requirements.

Handles and cares for animals and livestock by providing proper food, water, baths, exercise, and comfort; observes and documents animal behavior and health; notifies supervisor or other staff members if an animal needs immediate veterinary care; transports animals to veterinary hospital or clinic as needed.

Maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of animal enclosures and shelter facilities, including cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cages, and equipment; washes dishes and laundry; performs custodial and grounds maintenance.

Assists in administering vaccines, medications, and other treatment; participates in animal euthanasia and disposal of animals as required and assigned.

Utilizes computer systems to record, retrieve, gather, and maintain information and records on shelter activities, sheltered animals, adoption and placement, animal bite reports, and other animal services information; files and maintains records.

Assists with vaccination and licensing programs; issues and documents dog licenses; schedules spay and neuters for animals and books facilities for various clinics.

Serves as a primary point of contact for the Animal Services Division front office; receives guests; responds and provides information to the public and employees through various communications channels, such as in-person, telephone, and email interactions; prioritizes and assigns calls for service.

Performs a variety of clerical support duties for the Animal Services Division, including processing claims, invoices, and mail; prepares routine correspondence and flyers; keeps inventory and orders and stocks supplies.

Carries out duties aimed at increasing animal adoptions; collects and maintains animal photos and information for adoption websites; coordinates animal placement and transport arrangements; assesses animal temperament through socialization processes; conducts grooming procedures to enhance adoptability; responds to adoption inquiries on the adoption processes and other questions.

Assists and participates in a range of programs, clinics, and public events promoting animal control, care, and adoption; engages with various groups and delivers animal services related presentations.

May aid Animal Control Officers when handling potentially dangerous animals and responding to various complaints from the public.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Animal Shelter Technician Trainee
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Experience: No required experience.
Animal Shelter Technician I
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: Six (6) months as an Animal Shelter Technician Trainee or one (1) year of experience performing office clerical, Veterinary Technician, or Veterinary Assistant duties or providing customer service, and animal care and handling.
Animal Shelter Technician II
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: One (1) year of experience in a position equivalent to Kings County Animal Shelter Technician I.
All Levels
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and fingerprint check; must be willing to work irregular hours including emergencies, evenings, weekends, and holidays and work varying shifts as necessary.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees primarily work inside in an animal shelter environment but may occasionally be exposed to inclement weather conditions and potentially hazardous physical substances. The principal duties of the class generally involve exposure to dangerous, diseased, or injured animals. The work environment may be unpleasant and/or nauseating with possible exposure to rabid animals and animals that may have other infectious diseases. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

The ability and desire to work with and around animals including ill, injured and dying animals. Must be willing and able to perform animal euthanasia on a rotational basis and as assigned. The ability to lift and carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds. The ability to work a flexible schedule as needed and/or other non-traditional work-week which may include weekends and evenings. The ability to work occasional overtime and holidays is required. Sufficient physical strength, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to control animals and operate equipment used on the job; sufficient stamina to exert extra physical effort to restrain animals as necessary. The ability to use a computer, including the ability to enter/retrieve data with sufficient speed and accuracy to successfully perform the duties of the position.
