Job Requirements:
- Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri
- Current BLS Certification
- Six months experience in Pre-Op/PACU and/or surgery specialty clinic preferred

Job Relationships:
- Reports directly to the Director of Nursing
- Works directly with the surgeon clinics, pre-op nurses, and anesthesia.
- Works cooperatively with team members from each department within the center as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, reach, and stoop as needed.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to hear and understand.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
Responsibilities:
- Practice appropriate telephone and patient triage skills, being aware of the need to balance quality care with efficient use of time and resources.
- Perform verbal assessment with patient prior to admission – in person or via telephone, communicating information to appropriate team members.
- Perform patient teaching/education including NPO, arrival time, and other pre-operative surgical instructions including day of surgery and post operative schedule/plan of care.
- Assess, collaborate, and coordinate patient’s discharge planning needs and readiness for discharge with other members of the care team.
- Instruct patients in self-care techniques following the procedure including participation in follow up calls.
- Respond to telephone inquiries regarding expressed needs of the caller.
- Obtains pre-operative medical clearances and all required diagnostic tests from outside labs/physicians’ offices.
- Builds patient charts prior to surgery; ensures that all required medical clearances and test results are filed in the medical record.
- Evaluate and document histories and assess risk factors that may interfere with administration of anesthesia or delay surgical procedure.
- Promptly alert anesthesia team of results of labs, physical assessment, or special needs of individual with medical problems prior to the date of surgery.
- Perform EKGs and blood draws if/as indicated.
- Communicate special physician’s orders and ensure patient charting is completed in an accurate, concise, and timely manner.
- Implement safe, competent, and efficient patient care within policies, procedures, and standards.
- Set priorities adapting to changing patient situations in response to data indicating urgent and/or emergent risk to patient; initiating action to reduce or mitigate risk.
- Incorporates discharge/home care planning into the plan of care on an ongoing basis.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and employee information.
- Assists in maintaining an atmosphere of cooperation and professionalism within the center.
- Assists with maintaining a clean, safe and orderly environment within the center.
- Participates in in-services and staff meetings within department and maintains professional competency.
- Performs other duties and additional clerical work as needed.
