The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites candidates with strong information technology and data management skills to apply for the position of Information Technology (IT) Specialist (Data Management) within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) team, Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD.
The National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center is a 200-bed hospital dedicated to clinical research in which all care is delivered within the context of more than 1,600 active clinical research protocols. The Clinical Center’s mission is scientific discovery including clinical protocols to evaluate rare diseases and clinical trials of novel interventions. The Clinical Center Department of Laboratory Medicine provides comprehensive and cutting-edge diagnostic testing for the clinical care of patient-volunteers in the Clinical Center and provides collaborative support for the translational research being conducted by NIH investigators.
The DLM laboratory conducts some 3.5 million test results each year. Each of the clinical laboratory sections offers state-of-the-art laboratory services with an active research and method development program. The laboratory operates 24 hours per day, 365 days a year and employs approximately 200 staff members.
The CC Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) offers laboratory diagnostic support in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Sterility, as well as Phlebotomy Services. DLM supports clinical testing for patients and is also involved in the application of research approaches to clinical testing. DLM trains physicians and fellows from regional hospitals within the Washington, DC area, and trains medical technologists in the University of Maryland program.
As an IT Specialist (Data Management) within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) team, the incumbent serves as a specialist within the LIS team and provides the team and DLM with the automation skills and knowledge necessary to support the LIS within DLM. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for serving as a LIS liaison to assigned organizations of the Department and participating in the planning, maintenance, and administration of the LIS. The specialist, as part of the LIS team, will be responsible for carrying out the following duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct software checks to maintain stable and secure LIS performance. These checks are conducted daily to ensure LIS is performing according to operational and security requirements. Checks include reviewing and following up on automated LIS generated messages and end user feedback to address issues.
- Develop user and functional requirements and collaborate with appropriate stakeholders.
- Troubleshoot issues by developing and documentation changes and working with vendors to resolve problems and restore computer functions.
- Resolve hardware and software interface and interoperability problems.
- Manage the installation and integration of system fixes, patches, upgrades, and enhancements.
- Develop long term projections of hardware and software needs due to the long lead time required for security, budgeting, programming, and upgrade cycles.
The salary range starts at $ 99,200 up to $128,956.
