PURPOSE
This document defines the job description for the Bus Mechanic
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position requires the basic knowledge and skills to perform corrective and preventative maintenance on all MTA vehicles, equipment, buildings, property, and grounds. The technician will work closely with the Supervisor to assist in system analysis and policy implementation.
SUPERVISOR
This position reports to the Assistant Director: Maintenance
JOB DUTIES
- Perform vehicle preventive maintenance to meet MTA standards
- Diagnose vehicle defects and select a course of action for quality repairs
- Repair all aspects of vehicle body, chassis, and frame
- Be aware and learn all EPA regulations pertaining to chemicals used in body repairs
- Repair vehicles at a minimum cost without sacrificing quality of repair
- Ensure vehicles meet safety requirements in compliance with State and Federal laws
- Perform road calls as required
- Maintain a safe, clean, “team” oriented environment
- Assist in all repair functions as requested
- Properly use the Transit Fleet Maintenance Information System.
- Properly fills in appropriate information on work orders.
- Communicate professionally with supervisor and other technicians.
- Use safely power and hand-held mechanics tools.
- Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components to diagnose issues accurately
- Inspect vehicle computer and electronic systems to repair, maintain and upgrade
- Conduct routine maintenance work (replacing fluids, lubricating parts etc.) aiming to vehicle functionality and longevity
- Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues (e.g. leaks)
- Maintain equipment and tools in good condition
- Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma equivalent or greater
· Knowledge of service area
· Interpersonal skills and ability to lead by example
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to prioritize, manage time, and work independently effectively
· Possession of or ability to obtain CDL-B, Passenger Endorsement, Air Brake
· Demonstrate computer skills, basic skills required, advanced skills preferred
· Proven experience as auto mechanic
· Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles
· Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods
· Ability to handle various tools and heavy equipment
· Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times
- Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present

POSITION CATEGORY
Full time hourly position: Steps based on experience
The progression rate to be implemented for all new employees:
· 90% of the assigned classification rate for first six (6) months.
· 95% of the assigned classification rate for second six (6) months.
· 100% of the assigned classification rate after completion of twelve (12) months of service.

Basic Work Week – The basic work week for maintenance employees shall be five (5) working days of eight (8) hours each.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.20 - $33.22 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
